Central Adoption Authority: Central Adoption Authority Department of Social Development Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Development

Family Requirements

  • Age: Adopting parents must be at least 25 years of age and at least 21 years older than the child. If one of the adopting parents is a relative of the child, they must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Marriage: Generally, only married couples may adopt in Ghana, and must be married at least 2 year. A single person may adopt only if that person is a citizen of Ghana. Single males may not adopt unless the child to be adopted is his birth child or the courts determine that special circumstances apply. Same-sex couples may not adopt from Ghana.
  • Household: Families with up to 5 children may adopt.

Country Information

  • Travel: Three trips are required. A one month “bonding period” is required, and both parents are expected to travel. The second and third trips are for one to two weeks
  • Residency Requirements: There is no residency requirement to adopt a child from Ghana.
  • Wait Time: The adoption process can take approximately one year or more; each case can vary.

Children Available

  • Age of Children: In Ghana, a child is adoptable until he or she becomes an adult at 18 years of age. However, under US immigration law form 1-800 must be filed on the child’s behalf while the child is under the age of 16 or under 18 if the child has a sibling under 16).
  • Special Requests: Applicants must also prove their ability to care for a child that may be socially and culturally different from themselves and who may have experienced trauma due to family deaths, institutionalization, neglect, etc
